A returning soldier, tired from war writes a poem to his true love

These tired eyes

 copyright 2016 Citizen Zee

These tired eyes have seen so much,

Of life at best and worst,

The horrors of the battlefield

The worlds eternal curse.

These eyes have seen brotherhood,

Of one soldier for another,

But never love of family

Or a gentle mother.

These eyes saw life extinguished,

They saw a widows grief,

When war had taken her life’s love

Like an unrepentant thief.

Then these eyes saw beauty,

When they looked upon your face,

And I felt like an athlete

Who had run the toughest race

They saw us darling fall in love

And plan our lives together

Ill shelter you from all life’s woes

And all its stormy weather.

My heart is yours my darling

With eternal love so true

The only future i want now

Is hand in hand with you.

I love you darling more than life

I love how you love me

Let your face my darling

Be the last thing these eyes see.

I love you
