A young girl inquires her older sister on the meaning of the six strings of a guitar.

"Sister...why are there six strings on the guitar?" asked the little one.

The elder sister thought for a moment, then looked down to her sibling with a bright smile.

"Well there are six strings because they represent the six emotions" she explained.

The younger sister pondered this for a moment before answering

"But sister, there are so many more emotions than just six!"

The elder sister tenderly patted her younger sibling's head and looked directly into her eyes.

"You are correct my dear. Each one of these six strings represents either happiness, excitement, tenderness, sadness, anger, and fear. However...we also feel other emotions like love, compassion, surprise, hate, despair and much much more."

"The beauty of these six strings is we do not simply play one string at a time but instead combine them into soothing melodies and crisp chords. So in a sense, when we play these six strings, we are combining these emotions to become something entirely different. That is the virtue and power of music."

The younger sister gazed outward onto the horizon before speaking.

"I think I understand what you mean now sister. but tell me...why is it whenever you play...your music sound somber yet nostalgic?"

The elder sister lifted her hand and began to play softly while closing her eyes.

"I wish I could tell you why my love, but I'm afraid if I tell you, I won't be able to see you again. Please...don't ask me for the reason" she implored.

The younger sister yawned and her eyelids started to grow heavy.

"Whatever you say big sis', I trust you. I'm getting kinda tired, so I think I'll leave for a bit"

The elder sister stopped playing for a moment.

"Sleep tight little one, come visit me again when you wish to listen to me play" the elder sister cooed sadly.

And the elder sister was once again by herself. With just the guitar to keep her occupied, she began playing her somber yet nostalgic song once more.
