The wind is picking up as it carelessly tosses leaves to the other side of the road.
I look both ways and make my way across the street. I'm already late for work and my boss told me yesterday if I'm late one more time i will be fired.  I quickly weave in and out everybody walking past me. I walk past a man with a cigarette in his mouth and the smell of smoke hits my nose and i try not to cough. The pigeons are foraging for food and the sky is crystal clear blue and I look up at it and think to myself "why am I here? Do I really want this job where im forced to live in the city where the only bit of beautiful nature I get to see is the sky and an ocassional flower growing up out of the sidewalk between houses?
I look at my watch and see its 8:53 AM. I need to be there by 9 and I am still a good 10 minutes away. I begin sprinting my way down the road, having to stop at every red light, every passing car that doesn't bother to look for pedestrians. "this is stupid." I say to myself. Just then the wind shifted and a large gust of wind came rushing by and the hat flew off my head and back into a dark alleyway. "just great" i thought to myself.
I walked over to the alley and saw how dark and creepy it looked. "is this really worth my hat and the risk of getting fired?" i stood there a moment thinking and then I slowly walked out of the safe light of day and into a heavily shadowed small street. I found my hat, and put it back on my head and when i turned around i saw a woman sitting on the ground with her knees pulled close to her chest and her head buried in her arms.
I normally didn't pay any attention to homeless people but something was tugging at my heart telling me to say something. I walked over to her and stood there a minute, hoping she would hear me and look up. Nothing happened. So i cleared my throat loudly and i said "hello. are you ok?" No answer. "Do you want me to leave you alone?" I quietly asked. The woman lifted her head and looked straight into my eyes.
I swear my heart stopped beating for a moment, and then begain pounding in my chest and it sounded like it was trying to get out. I fell to my knees and began to cry as i tucked her hair behind her ear. "mom?" I said. She put her arms around me and cried with me for what seemed like hours. At this point i wasn't even thinking about work.
You see when I was a young teen, maybe 14 or 15, i was separated from my mom when didn't come home from work one night. She was abducted and then held hostage for years. But everyone just assumed she was killed and that was what I was told.
"how did you end up here?" I asked her. She said "It doens't matter right now. You found me." I stood up and looked at this skinny, dirty remnants of a lonely soul who used to be a lively, beautiful woman. I sat back down next to her and said "your eyes haven't changed a bit!" Mom smiled at me. "Let's go home. " I said. I took her hand and i helped her up and hugged her.
Here I thought I was going in to find my hat with a chance of getting killed or robbed or soemthing, and here i am walking out of a lonely, depressing, dark, and scary alleyway with a woman whom i thought was just broken reamains of someone who simply didn't have a place to live. Yes, you could see my mom as such right now, but what i see is the liveliest woman in the world with the biggest heart who just needed to be found.
I ended up being promoted at my job and my mom recently started a new one and is a successful music teacher.
