The Toy

Funny because he was looking for us, but was not quite prepared for what he’d see. He’s used to preying on our smaller brothers and sisters, and he’s rather taken aback by our size.

That little fire stick he carries that makes him so bold, well, it’s not going to do him much good now is it. It might tear holes and cause lethal damage to the others but for us it will be no more than a gnat’s bite.

Let’s toy with him. We owe him that. How many of our kind have been left to die and bleed to death in agony by those just like him? It’s amazing that there are any of them left apart from the ones they have placed in cages for others to come and stare at.

He is so small compared to our paws. I little flick and he goes tumbling, crying, terrified. Let’s show him a claw. Fully extended it would reach from his head to his toes. Look at him, trying to crawl away....so easy to reach out and bring him back, it doesn’t even take much of a stretch.

Shall we eat him? Too small, a mere morsel, not worth spitting out the clothing of. But it would do no harm to let him think we might, drool a bit and lick our lips. A glimpse of a tooth or two will set him to trembling, we’re sure.

But we’re tiring of this new toy now. Too small too eat and too scared to run, it just stands there, the inconsequential thing that it is. The heat is making us dozy. If it were him, we have no doubt that he would kill us. But I think we’ll give in to the heat, the sleep, and take a catnap. Him, well, he can stay for us to toy with some more or he can take advantage and take himself and his fire stick back to wherever they came from.
