NOBODY SPEAKS

I pretend to be working like everyone else,

Hunched over my laptop, I’m fooling myself.

Assembled around this bistro table

They’re all so busy, all so able.

All with their own agendas and beliefs,

But the funny thing is, nobody speaks!

Amid those gathered, I’m just an imposter,

I have no friends… no interests either.

Except for people-watching, that is,

I’m a loner, what they call a social misfit.

Awkward and shy, prone to blood red cheeks,

I actually like the fact nobody speaks.

Over my lap-top I sneak a peek,

She’s there again, sitting facing me.

On her phone… most likely Facebook,

Or on-line shopping for the latest look.

I like her, she’s pretty

But alas, all I could attract, is her pity.

She has such lovely, creamy skin

And I like the fact she’s not too thin.

Her long dark lashes almost brush her cheeks,

But her head stays bowed… nobody speaks.

Then there’s the guy sitting next to me,

Chewing his thumb nail, nervously.

Looking for train times at the local station,

Perhaps for a clandestine assignation.

He picks up his phone and writes a text,

And still, nobody ever speaks

I do so admire his expertise…

that guy whose fingers fly over the keys.

I guess he’s a student writing a dissertation,

Or perhaps completing a job application.

Despite his envious, fluid technique,

Nothing changes… nobody speaks.

And so I hide behind this vase of flowers,

As I sit here watching, for hours and hours.

Should I ask the girl with the creamy skin

If she’d like to come with me for a spin?

Who am I kidding to consider such cheek?

And anyway, why bother… no-body speaks.
