Social media has allowed many publications to reach their audiences in multiple ways. Social media has increased engagement with the readers. For example, if we are talking about a big accident that took many lives, people will be able to share information. Those who witnessed the accidents will post videos or pictures. Today we have Twitter where you find a #hashtag for a certain topic and everyone shares their views using that hashtag. When you are engaging in a topic on social media you do not need to be formal like in the editorial letter.
Editors have moved with times; they use social media to connect with their audiences unlike in the old times where they had to go through lot of editorial letters. BBC news always has a quiz on Instagram, where your knowledge is tested about historical things or current news around the world. This way is much better than playing the crossword puzzle at the back of the newspaper or a magazine. The quiz forces you to think fast. To grab large audiences and reader’s journalists now share the links to their stories especially the breaking news. In this way lot of people get to know about a story and can ask questions, without having to wait for the next day they get their answers within a few hours or minutes. As a journalist, this helps you to get an angle for the follow up story.
Social media can be used to promote stories and the newspaper publications, radio, television, can gain lot from this. They will get a better content especially if they interact with their readers. In the old days, a journalist approached the editor with a story that only five people know about. These days’ editors get to know what is the community buzzing about through social media.

Editorial is always bent upon personal opinion. What I believe social media has done is to extend that range of opinion to the 'masses.' But it is all still opinion, and opinion isn't fact. Whatever 'fact' is. Like what you wrote... very much.
Fri, May 4th, 2018 10:51pmHaving written for a newspaper for some time, I think I know something about the role a journalist should play in society. One of those roles is discovering stories known by very few people, sometimes even fewer than five, simply because it affects a large number of people who are completely unaware of this. Simply writing about what an awful lot of people already know, means reinforcing their existing beliefs. People generally would like to see and read what they already more or less know. That has got very little to do with gathering news, it is just a form of providing entertainment disguised as news. That could be one of the reasons why most newsitems in modern media suffer from a lack of depth. Make things bite size, and make them shallow, so they become easy to digest, and people will lap them up.
