Crimson petals dotted

the gray expanse of the valley

like drops of blood

spilled from the prick

of an unsuspecting finger.

The veins of the parched land

crawled towards salvation—

a single bead of the earth’s elixir—

the branching paths but streaks of

lightning striking at nothing but thirst.

And what of the small form

draped in her frosted ivory dress,

feet bare and face veiled, destination

painted for her with the flaming

blossoms of her reluctant bondage?

Her soft hands clutching at the folds

of her dress, her brown eyes tainted with tears,

longing for the power never granted

to choose, for herself, the life

she should have been provided.
