When I originally wrote this in high school, I tried to be clever with the title so no one would figure out I was addressing global warming and the arguments that tend to spring up around the
subject. This isn't a work of activism; it's the only poem I've written that rhymes naturally, so I'm still proud of it.

One Side

He beckoned me with steel face,
“How dare you run this mortal race?”
So then I stood my ground and frowned,
“And this makes you all good and gowned?”
He stared at me with strange young eyes,
“But now you should not take the prize.”
“Oh, I will take no prize,” I said,
“But I will watch you rest your head.
What measly threat; I’ll rule the land!
I’ll rest, you’ll work, the price is grand.”
So then he raised his eyebrows, mate:
“How dare you say I’ll fall to fate?”
I answered him, “My side proves right.
I know the future; it’s in sight.”
At that, he looked quite terrified:
“I was already scared!” he cried.
For that is why they fight the proof;
Since all they’ve done is one big goof.

The Other Side

I beckoned him with steel face,
“How dare you run this mortal race?”
So then he stood his ground and frowned,
“And this makes you all good and gowned?”
He was but hiding in my lies.
I told him not to take the prize;
“Oh, I will take no prize,” he said,
“But I will watch you rest your head.
What measly threat; I’ll rule the land!
I’ll rest, you’ll work, the price is grand.”
Now that was at a stubborn rate;
“How dare you say I’ll fall to fate?”
He told me he knew he was right:
“I know the future; it’s in sight.”
To my complete surprise, he lied!
“I was already scared!” I cried.
They know that my side fights the proof;
That’s why we say they’re one big goof.
