To The West

My walking boots stand by the door,

demanding to be worn;

with some conflicting feelings

I find that I am torn.

There’s nothing that I’d rather do

than put them on and walk,

feeling quite inadequate

I’ve had quite enough of talk.

I’d walk and walk for hours,

forever heading west

for there it is that I will find

the cliffs that are the best.

A voice inside my head screams out

to jump I really should,

the temptation is so strong

and I only wish I could.

But I find my feet are tied,

my ankles held in chains,

those made of responsibility

that tighten up again.

I cannot take that final jump,

I have to stick it out,

and battle through the sadness,

the depression and the doubt.

But before I turn away

I look out really far,

and there’s a tiny flickering,

our very special star.

A tiny little glimmer

means that maybe I can cope;

so long as I can still retain

that minutest bit of hope.
