Through The Fog

The fog was so thick, I found it hard to make out just who or what was approaching. It was a strange fog, dense, cloying and exceedingly sudden in it’s onset.

I’d not normally take the path through the woods but I knew that I was running late. My master was generous in giving me an afternoon off. I could not repay his kindness by arriving back too late to serve him his dinner.

Maybe there’s nothing there in front of me. A trick, perhaps, played by my eyes and caused by the sudden change in light. A shudder runs down my back and my mother’s voice sounds inside my head; ‘Someone has just walked over your grave.’ Nonsense, just superstition, but still I clasp my shawl that bit tighter, look down at the ground. In spite of my hurry, my footsteps begin to slow.

A noise from in front of me makes me look up. I can only describe it as a kind of gasp. In spite of the sound I am still not sure if there really is anything there. It could be nothing more than my mind running away with me. A sigh of the wind through the trees, perhaps.

There! I’m sure I saw something move. What is it? Who is it? Maybe I am later than I think and my master has come out to search for me. But no; he could not possibly know that I would be taking this path. It cannot be him.

Straining my eyes, I try to stop myself from trembling. I step forward, one reluctant step after another. Is it someone wearing grey? No, what I saw before was white, I’m sure of it.

As if from a distance it comes, swooping rapidly. A phantom of some sort? A ghost? I want to turn away and run, but my fear freezes my feet in place. I open my mouth to scream but it swallows me up before I make a sound.
