My sixteenth birthday
you tell me
we must stop

I ask why
Don’t you love me

He cries
more than ever
but you must be free
to choose

I choose you Daddy
and all that we do
I need you inside me
making me whole
and strong

In my soul
I know
he is right
the past
is not our future

We become
like some
old married couple
a kiss on the cheek
a hug at the door
holding hands on the couch
watching movies
with happy endings

Some nights
we shut off the news
I read aloud to him
while he
polishes his boots
or builds tiny things

He stumbles at first
but finds delight
in reading to me
discovering his voice
and himself

I am content to be
him and me
