when the rain arrives

Today I saw a man walk into a puddle

and not return.

I think the man was wearing green,

but that won’t help them.

I sat for some time,

maybe an hour,

before deciding—

to sink or to swim?

I thought of it and jumped

catching breath to hold a scream.

And I think it was a few minutes

before I saw him, the man in green.

He grabbed my hand,

rather composed for a state of drowning,

and we ascended to the pavement.

I wanted to put a sign—

but then some would jump for the chance it was.
