Mathematics

Mathematics – a subject that I was useless at, had almost zero talent in. I could master the basics like addition and subtraction; multiplication and division, even percentages and fractions. Add a letter to the numbers though and my brain would freeze up and shout ‘No!’

This is about zero. Nothing, nil, zilch, whatever you’d like to call it. If you multiply zero by any number you still end up with the same – a big, fat nothing. Can’t get less than that, can you? Well, yes, you can. There’s as many numbers below zero as there are above, negative as well as positive ones that stretch out infinitely in both directions. These are termed minus numbers, ones that indeed are worth less than zero.

Someone once told me that when you reach rock bottom, level zero, the only way to then go is up.

Well, they were so very wrong there!

The descent can be never-ending – there’s no magic zero to stop the fall. The only thing that will determine that you cannot go any lower is yourself when you just can’t take any more.
