It was a dark and stormy night.  Thank the gods!

When the thunder began, Katrynia had sprung from her bed and fallen to her knees on the floor.  She remained there, sometimes half-dozing but praying with all her heart,  for the rest of the night, rising  to her feet only as the first blush of dawn graced the sky.

And what a wondrous sky it was!  Heavy clouds covered the land from horizon to horizon, lit from the underside by the rising sun.  The season of The Dark had finally arrived.

Kat's practiced eye told her that the sun would no longer be visible within as little as 20 minutes.  That being the case, she prepared to go outside, (in the daytime!) for the first time in seven months.  There had been only sporadic showers during that time, and the crops and the people had suffered thereby.

As she approached the temple that morning, she was greeted by streams of people coming from all over the city.  In the final hundred meters, splashes of water kicked up by children from the ceremonial pools soaked everyone, regardless of rank or position.

Each time one was splashed, the recipient of the water bowed to the child responsible in thanks for the blessing.

After the priests had completed leading the prayer service, the Holy Maiden made her appearance.  After bestowing a smile on all who had gathered, she turned and began to sing as she lead them all to the viewing platforms carved into the side of the mountain above the temple.

By long tradition, nobody turned to look at the valley floor below them until the final note of the Holy Maiden's song had completely faded.  Upon viewing the valley, and the tens of thousands of trees that were slowly unfurling their branches, one and all fell to their knees in thanksgiving.

The People had survived.  The cycle of Death had ended.  The cycle of Rebirth had begun.  All was well.
