Failure To Thrive

I hardly dare make the trip outside. I know what I am going to find....nothing! Those tiny green shoots that we all need so badly are not going to have appeared. Yet again whatever crops might have begun to grow have just rotted away.

The earth is baked solid by the relentless beating of the sun. As hard as concrete, as difficult to get through. Apart from the cracks and crumbled parts, but even they are just too dry to let any of the seedlings thrive.

For a while it wasn’t too bad. There were stocks of food, entire shops and warehouses full. It would be okay, the rain would come. That’s what we were told, that’s what we believed; but the weeks and months went by without a drop.

As I expected there is nothing; not one seedling has made it. No green to be seen. Grass has been shrivelled away and the trees don’t even produce leaf buds any more. It’s just a barren desolate waste-land now. Kind of ironic that they named the planet Earth really, because there is nothing else to see.

Even the oceans are drying up. There is so much more land now that the water level has receded.

In spite of the failing crops I know that I won’t die of starvation. No, dehydration and thirst will see to me before that. There are not many of us surviving even now and if the rains do not come the entire planet will be devoid of all forms of life within a month.

I can’t stay outside for long. The heat of the sun will become unbearable way before it gets high up in the sky. Any trips out must be confined to dawn or dusk. I’ll return to my shelter and seek out the comfort of the shadows once more.
