Light peers through the crack near the floor

As I watch her shadow pass through it

I can’t take this anymore

After hours of dead silence

She finally opens the door

I attempt to study her eyes

But instead see the needle on the floor

And the burnt spoon by its side

Hung blankets shut out the light of day

And on her bed a bible lay

She has not left her smoky haven in days

When was the last time she ate?

I can see through the layers of makeup

Her skin is still plagued

I had hoped she would not give in this time

After days of fighting this demon

I assumed she was strong enough inside

And might be liberated of her affliction

My heart sunk into my stomach

Perhaps we can try again tomorrow dear mother
