Lights up on a small graveyard in the mid-1970s. Silhouettes of tall trees slice like skyscrapers into a rich purple sky. If you look closely some stars are visible, just barely making a presence. The stage is home to around 12 scattered tombstones situated in two “rows”. An old, and I mean old, cast iron fence sits behind the last row of grave markers. It’s bent and collapsing. Dead flowers wilt at the face of roughly half the tombstones, their petals are nearly all gone. The grass has visibly been cut, however, it is choppy.

In the front row of tombstones, near the second to left side, a young girl quietly shivers, confusion and terror grip her.

She is looking around, but nothing seems to make sense.

Enter Lenny, the old man.

Lenny walks among the tombstones; his right-hand traces the shape of each grave, he finds some odd comfort in the cold granite. His left-hand holds a rake, a knapsack is slung over his back. He knows this place well. Years of working in the graveyard has left him tan and callused-not in the abrasive sense, but one that radiates safety. His face has wrinkles around his eyes from a lifetime of smiling.

He then sees the Young Girl.

.

LENNY

(Rests his rake against the nearest tombstone) Miss…? A-Are you okay?

(The Young Girl turns to see Lenny)

LENNY

Wait hold on, I’m…

(The Young Girl yelps)

LENNY

Hey… it’s okay, I’m not-I’m not going to hurt you

(She is still frozen)

LENNY

(He feels around his pockets for something) Here, look (He pulls out a small flower) The name’s Lenny.

(Pause)

(She takes the flower)

THE YOUNG GIRL

…T-T-Thanks

(Pause)

LENNY

…What’s your name?

(pause)

THE YOUNG GIRL

Lily.

(Lenny smiles)

LENNY

Okay, um, Lily… W-Why are you here? In this graveyard? Can I call someone? Your folks? The police? Did someone hurt you?

LILY

I-I don’t… I don’t know

LENNY

You’re freezing… Here

(he takes off his coat)

Take my coat, god knows you need it more than I do. With the sun down, it will drop to the 30s, and that’s if we’re lucky.

(Lily takes the coat)

LILY

Thank you.

LENNY

Look, before that happens let’s get back to the office. I’ve got some Nestle hot chocolate packets, those will hold you over until help arrives. Let’s go.

LILY

I’m scared… I don’t know if I should…

LENNY

Lily, please. You look like you n-need help. I won’t hurt you… You can trust me. You’ll freeze out here.

(She doesn’t budge)

(He moves to get up)

I’ll go call someone.

LILY

I don’t know.

(Lenny stops and turns towards her)

LENNY

Pardon?

LILY

W-What happened to me?

LENNY

Lily I have-I haven’t a clue… You’re not making sense… Here come with me, I’m too old to drive you home but we’ll go to the phone and call for help.

(Lily doesn’t budge)

Lily?

(No response)

I guess we are staying here.

LILY

I don’t remember, I-I don’t know.

LENNY

Lily…I… what do you mean?

LILY

How did I get here?

LENNY

Lily… I’m trying to help… I’m just as confused as you are.

LILY

I don’t remember anything. I can’t remember anything. I’m scared. I’m so… alone…

LENNY

What? What is going on? Either way, miss, I think you should come with me. We can figure this out.

(pause)

LILY

Look, I don’t even know you. I don’t know how I got here, I don’t know who you are. I barely can piece together who I am. What the fuck is going on?! I’m in a graveyard for Christ’s sake!

LENNY

I’m here to help. It’s twilight, there won’t be much light left… I don’t want you to be out here at dark, all alone.

Here,

(He pulls his flashlight from his knapsack, flicks it on, and points it towards Lily)

For your safety, let’s get moving…

(The bright flashlight puts Lily in a trance, she is frozen)

LILY

(She yelps)

(Sound of a car screeching is heard)

LENNY

…Lily…?

LILY

God no… The memories…

They’re here.

It was late… very late. I was coming home from school, god why did I stay there so long? “Lily…Please, please get a ride home” Mama said… “I’ll be fine”.  I did what I normally would do-walk down the hill to my house.

Dogwood.

Elm.

Acacia.

Tamarisk.

Hemlock.

The streets I’ve been so familiar with, ones that I passed nearly every day, now spelled death for me.

Hemlock… I needed to cross. One light split into two.

They grow closer, the thunder of the motor, the wind howling in the trees, that sick fucking laugh, the crack of lighting! The Ford logo! My scream! The crunch of bone!

(long pause)

Then there was that noise.

Bells.

Those voices.

(pause)

I’m dead.

(she collapses)

LENNY

What the hell…

(pause)

Lily wha-I don’t understand.

LILY

I died!

LENNY

C’mon… that-that doesn’t make sense. Lily, you’re alive/

LILY

I’m fucking dead!

(pause)

LENNY

Lily, you’re not dead… it’s just a… just a bad dream that’s all. Here, come with me

(Lily tries to move away from the grave, but she hits an invisible wall)

LENNY

Oh my/ What is going on?

LILY

I’m… I’m trapped? W-What happened to going to heaven? What happened to leaving this world? …Oh no, no no please god no!

(Lily sits down and cries)

LENNY

I…I don’t know what to say…

(Lenny slowly takes a seat next to Lily, his old age is really getting to him)

(A pause)

LENNY

My… my wife died 30 years ago. She was my everything…  I wasn’t one to have many friends. All through my life, I was an outsider. My parents never let me out, but I was never invited to do things anyway. I never had birthday parties, but, again, I had no one to invite. Then she came along… I don’t know what she saw in me, but she brought a world of color with her. …It was something I had never experienced before…

Then she was taken from me. To this day I… I don’t know why. I died that day, I had no one else to enjoy the little things with.

I just know that I’ve been so lonely ever since.

LILY

How do you deal with it..? With being so alone?

LENNY

Working the graveyard keeps me sane… The…The routine of it-tending the grounds, placing flowers, and something about being surrounded by so many others keeps me company, I know that sounds weird, but after 30 years, you learn to accept it. It’s all I have. Until- well, never mind.

(pause)

LILY

I’ve been- I mean was an outsider…

LENNY

You too?

LILY

Yeah. No one at school. Home wasn’t much better either. I studied to keep my mind off it. Without it I would fall apart. So, I guess, I kinda understand what you mean by relying on routine.

LENNY

Mhmm

(They share silence)

LILY

…What was your wife’s name?

LENNY

Ha... funny you should ask. Her name…

(slight pause)

Her name was Lily.

LILY

Oh…

LENNY

It’s a beautiful name.

Well, I’ve got another day ahead of me tomorrow. It’s also a long walk back to my place.

(as he goes to stand up he is unaware that his keys fall out of his pocket)

(Lily picks up the keys)

LILY

(her voice trails off as she notices the unmistakable Ford logo etched into the Key) …Ford…

(Lenny whips around to grab his keys)

Y-You told me that you w-weren’t able to…

LENNY

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

LILY

Oh god…

Oh no no no no…

it was you?

LENNY

Why did you have to / remember?

LILY

Why? Why would you do this?

LENNY

Don’t you see? We need each other. It’s you and me, Lily. How I missed having you in my life, Lily.

LILY

Let me go, you’re sick!

LENNY

That’s the thing… I can’t, Lily. Since your body was so mangled your soul can never leave.

You’re stuck here, with me. You’d better get used to it.

(He bursts out laughing)

LILY

Not that laugh… god no. Fuck you!

LENNY

You better shut your goddamn mouth. Do you have any idea how long this has taken?

LILY

Get away from me. I don’t fucking care.

LENNY

Look around you. You see those? 12 tries. I tried 12 fucking times.

(he runs over to one of the tombstones)

See this? YOU FUCKING SEE THIS LILY?! Liliana Craddock. Turns out drowning doesn’t have the intended effect. A-a-and you see this one over here? Lily Thompson. I guess a bullet to the forehead doesn’t fucking work either! Howabout this/one

LILY

Alright I fucking get it you twisted/psychopath! What the fuck is wrong-

LENNY

DO YOU REALLY? Do you really get it? All this hard work, all those years of loneliness, and how do I get rewarded? I thought you would be grateful. After all I’ve done for you… I freed you from your hell back there!

LILY

Jesus no… no this… this can’t…

LENNY

Your mine forever, Lily. I will not lose you.

(he walks off, grabbing his rake)

Not this time.

(Lily stands alone in the graveyard)

End.
