Cherry Tree When my son-in-law informed me that he bought the sapling at $-36, it was hard for me to believe it at first. Approximately five feet tall, lots of branches full of lush green leaves, in one red coloured earthen tob ultimately soften me to believe that. While left on the barbeque area ( an open built up space, attached with family dining) for few work days waiting to be planted - gust wind overturned it several times resulting some broken branches and some portion of the leaves fallen. Finally when the weekend arrived and my son-in-law had the opportunity to plant the sapling at the backyard of the house - most of the leaves were gone. It was like a festival day. Whole family was engaged. Son-in-law dug a deep hole 1x1x1.5 feet in the ground to accommodate the formation of the roots as per the shape of the tob. He then put some organic fertilizer and plant the sapling. Me and grand daughter helped in uncoiling the 200 feet water hose and water the planted sapling. Daughter turned on the water valve. Some months old grand daughter was on the watch from the lap of her grandmother. Merry mood of the family continued till after noon and landed in a barbeque party in the evening. My son, always busy with football and cricket after office hours - joined us from a distance of an hour drivng. We may neglect the persons engaged in grass cutting in our part of the world, Asia but in USA it is a big hassle and big money. Big big companies are there to cut grasses and trim roadside trees. Home owners can do it themselves or hire any person or company to cut grasses. If you do not keep your front or backyard mowed regularly - certainly you will receive notice from the municipality or enquiry from your neighbors whether you are sick or away. It was hard for my son-in-law to water the planted sapling after regular mowing of the yards every alternate day because he was to tend the vegetables garden. So I tried to water the sapling before his return from the office to lessen some of his burden. My actions were not approved by son-in-law as it was also lessening the burning of his fat so his visit and checking the sapling was daily regular. At first we followed the watering guide lines of card attached with the sapling - it was few minutes every alternate day. Few days later we noticed that the branches were becoming dry. Then we started to water everyday for more minutes. Month passed by, defying all our cares, the sapling was not showing any sign of living. Two more summer months we continued watering but our hearts were broken. When we left Michigan for Bangladesh at the beginning of bitter and cold winter only the dried branches were left to perch small birds and butterflies. Six cold months when temperature drops below zero sometimes to minus 30-40 deg Celsius. Snow covers everything. Blanket of 2 - 3 feet thick snow relieve the home owners from the hassle of mowing and allow them to enjoy the warmth of steaming coffee or tea in the evening. Trees shed all their leaves. April is the starting month of summer. Plant and trees start to rise again from their slumber. Leaves and flowers start to colour the surrounding. Look at the pictures- daughter laughing again. Oh my God! What it is? The Cherry Tree? It is boasting with lush green leaves and flowers. This time it is a big laughter from my side and a moment of great joyous enjoyment. Thank God we.did not uproot the dried sapling but continued watering.
