Mick Manley of Farmers Insurance, Omaha, knows that news of data breaches and hacking are alarming to his clients.

“The threat exists. And it doesn’t matter who you’re dealing with online—everyone is vulnerable,” said Manley. “That is why it is crucial to be proactive and alert when it comes to cyber-security. Clients also have to play a role in the security of their personal information.”  He provides a few tips:

  • Your passwords. Use a strong password. Do not use any part of your birthday or address.
  • Where you access your information. Do not use public wi-fi when accessing information or anything sensitive.
  • Only download apps from trusted sources. Insurance provider and payment apps should come from official app stores.
  • Secure your phone. Beyond a password that locks your screen, consider encrypting your phone, which will make it practically impossible to access in the event your phone is lost or stolen.
  • Your insurance provider. Ask your agent if the app has automatic protection features built in.

“The bottom line is that security of your personal information is something we take as seriously as our clients do,” Manley said. “We want them to have the safest tools to use, and to educate them on how to safely use them.”
