A few years back I was working at a top ATL agency in India. I was heading the IT division of the company. Being a part of the IT team made me both an insider and an outsider. Always been stuck in this position led me to know many stories of the office.

Working at an advertising agency is totally different than working at any other corporate firm. The people working at an ad agency are rule breakers. While one day you may find them pulling all-nighters, the very next day you will find them sleeping till 6 in the evening. The people at my office were always under the stress of result delivery.  The types of stress that I experience varied from the stress of meeting deadlines to that of budget reduction. When the economy used to go bad, the first thing that any business used to cut down on was the advertising which left us with nothing. While working at the ATL agency I realized the power that a customer possesses. They would have no knowledge about how that process of advertising works but would end up telling you how your idea is wrong and what changes they want in it. Half of the time used to go in trying to explain your idea to the clients and justify how it would work for them.

Our ATL agency was one place with a variety of people working at the office. If you would walk down the office corridors you would find people in button down suits sitting along with the funny dressed up creative individuals working on a project. It consisted of different types of artists 8including graphic designers, producers, sound artists, etc. With every new business that we received there was an opportunity to get to know a business from inside out and put our brains to work again. You understand the business’s USP, what makes them different and how your agency can help them . Every new project was a new learning curve full of challenging edges. Woking at an ad firm had its own fun side. There were times when I used to be home, watching TV and the kids used to start demanding the latest toy after watching its ad and the wife used to give me the look saying-“You are responsible for this”.

Working at an ATL agency has been a fun journey for me and has taught me a lot about my work and also how the world works and thinks. It has been the real enlightenment factor for me.
