Dear Absent Father

You're missing the tantrums and the slamming doors, the sleepless nights and fights in the morning. The tummy bugs, fevers, doctors waiting rooms, trips to the ER. You're missing cooking meals that won't get eaten, the arguments to eat his vegetables, the explanations as to why chocolate isn't food. You're missing being broke and stressing about school fees. You're missing being woken up at the crack of dawn and snuggling in bed. The books you have to read over and over again, the stories he gets immersed in. You're missing being smothered in kisses and being told he loves you. You're missing teaching him to ride a bike and watching him explore with mud and grass. Dirty hands and stained clothes. Drawings on the wall. Seeing his pride and excitement at achievements. You're missing the seriously funny things he says and acting silly to make you laugh. The squeals and giggles when he's tickled. You're missing kissing his scrapes and holding him when he cries. Building forts with couch cushions, pretend trains and watching his imagination grow.

Dear Absent Father, you've missed raising the most delightful, lovable, kind and amazing human being.
