The Peacock Woman

No, I can’t take it anymore. There is a person behind that peacock that you see.

Of course, at first, you only see those flashy feathers and confident posture that everyone is mesmerized by. Eventually, you want to take it home and store in your tiny room, a winter garden at best. It will walk by the stuffed animals that you hunted, and your guy friends got you for your birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

It will walk by the pictures of the family that left you, expensive toys, crafted whiskey and handmade leather furniture. It will touch the multitude of issued checks, divorce paperwork, crumpled hundred-dollar bills and shoes, myriads of shoes.

Then her feathers start falling as you have no idea how to treat a peacock. You are a hunter, not an animal preserve or a shelter. When it starts fading away and dying, looking at the colorful ashes you finally realize that there is a woman there: with flesh, heart, warm hands, beautiful smile and intriguing stories that she weaves for you. You sleep with her, fuck her, feed her, talk to her till the sun comes up. You just can’t get enough of her: the more you drink her, the thirstier you get. But that’s not what you wanted: you got a peacock and ended up with … a woman? Yes, incredible woman, one of a kind, but, what the heck? What are you going to do with her? There is no room in that space stuffed with “things”, memories, pain and numbness from the past.

“You want money? Girl, take some, that’s all I have for you. Want some whiskey for the road? It’s supposed to be good: 18 years old, like one of my children that don’t talk to me anymore.”
