I don’t have to go back, she says to the empty fridge.
I don’t have to go back, the twin bed mocks her.
I don’t have to go back, the thermostats clicks up higher.
I don’t have to go back, she says to the hole in her heart.
I don’t have to go back, fingers dig into wrists, hair balled up in fists.
I don’t have to go back, chain lock on the door and blood on the floor.
I don’t have to go back to the taste of his lips,
the taste of jealousy and infidelity.
His words tumbling out in haste, his facade jumbling.
His hands are faster than mine.
I don’t have to go back.
My clothing on then floor.
Whore. His wife is a whore.
She not worth it anymore. No charms, a mistake.
Why did they engage? He never wore his ring.
I don’t have to go back, a memory of sleep and he’s there in my dreams.
Standing, watching over me. I don’t have to go back, but who else will love me like that?
