Desert Sands

There had long been a rumor of the Immortal Desert Sands, but there was never any agreement about where they might be. People searched and returned disappointed, or did not return at all. There was no way of knowing if they had been lucky in their search, for who would leave if they found them, or if they perished during their expedition.

It wasn’t widely publicized though. The serious scientists liked to keep it to themselves for it would cause nothing but chaos and havoc should word of its possible existence leak out in to the wider world. Absolute discretion was essential.

I travelled North, I travelled South. Not a sign of this much sought place did I find. Next I headed eastwards but again was disappointed. It was only when I went far, far to the West that I had an inkling of the idea that I was drawing close.

It’s not that there were any signposts. No, it was more of a feeling, an intuition, if you will. I could just ‘feel’ that I was on the right track so on I went until I found myself suddenly surrounded by sand.

This sand didn’t seem to begin suddenly. One moment I was on solid ground and the next all I could see around me were these golden grains of sand. I turned full circle and there was nothing else to see. No buildings, no trees, nothing but yellowness.

And then I spotted something moving in the distance. No, not one thing but three. Closer and closer they seem to be getting. I have to rub my eyes, smack myself around the head for I must be dreaming somehow, mustn’t I?

Skeletons! And not just any skeletons but those of dinosaurs, chasing a human skeleton. As he draws closer I’m sure I recognize him. Is it....? Could it really be Graham McReedy? He was one of the first to take up the search in recent times. It must be five years or more since anyone had heard a word of him.

I think I’d better turn and run, but where to? There’s nowhere to go.

“Bad luck,” he gasps out. “You found it, but it is nothing but a curse.”

I was right then. There is no mistaking his voice. “But does it not give immortality like we all believed?”

“In a way. To the bones but not the body. You’ve found yourself to the place where your bones will never rest. If I was you I’d start running now.”

Running! I’d never signed up for that....I’ve not run since I left school. “So, how many have found their way here then?”

“Hundreds! And we all have to run forever!”

The Immortal Desert Sands – a cursed place after all.
