Can you put a price on suffering. Can you put a price down on one knee, with a poem from a cartoon and a boy who didn’t look real himself and a girl who couldn’t tell the difference. Can you total that up and amount it to every sleepless night, every twist of my arm, every tear drop that fell with no one to catch it in loving hands. Can you count the diamonds and weigh the gold and tell me I’ll be okay, tell me this is my worth, hand me an apple and a key to a door. If I knew how to fish, maybe you could lead me to water. I used to count every rung, every chip, every sparkle. I used to have them memorized.
It summed us up. Me and you. You and me. intertwined in pain and occasional ecstasy. Ecstasy could only be achieved when your hurting me. Hurting me, this total doesn’t add up to the price. So as I handed them over, she smiled “I love ruby’s maybe I’ll buy this one!” I tried to smile back, but all I could picture was my blood running over those gems. My pain coursing through each diamond. Them now in her hands. I hope she runs them through moonlight, buries them in the dirt, fills them up with smoke from sage and lets them sit in a running river first.
