The Book

I have this book upon my shelf that has been passed down through four generations. It’s cover is not in the best of condition and the pages are beginning to look aged.

It is a book of fiction, of fairy-tales and magic. Castles loom up in to the clouds, mermaids comb their hair on the rocks. If the damsel should have a problem, a hero will turn up and resolve it. And the princess always gets her prince.

There is evil there too, in the shape of trolls, ogres, monsters and dragons. Oh, and let’s not forget the wicked witch who flies through the air on her broomstick, casting spells on all and sundry. But in this book, good always conquers evil.

Deceit gets its dealt with harshly. Lies are uncovered. The truth always wins, as does true love.

I used to adore this book but now I feel like tearing it to shreds, hurling it at the wall. I used to believe in fairy-tales but they do not come true. I want to destroy it, but I won’t.

What I will do is place it right at the back of the shelf where I will not see it again.
