Any member of the Arm Forces can stop at any base and collect their pay on the 15th and 1st of the month while they are on leave.

One day this service member walked up to the counter and presented his pay records. I told him to take a set while I work this out. I set down at my desk and noticed that he was in the Air Force. At this time Ft Lewis and McCord Air Base were two different stations. I turned to my buddy and said ”I wonder why he did just go to McCord?” We just looked at each other as I picked up the phone and put a call into McCord finance department. The airman answered the phone and after I identified myself I gave him the airman’s name and last 4 of his social security, he told me to hold on while he looks it up. (now at this time we still had the physical paper records, in other words we were not yet computerized). He was gone for about ten minutes when he came back on the phone whispering

“Is the member still there?” “What are you whispering about he cannot hear you,” I replied. “OK Call the MP (Military Police) the member has been AWOL (absent without leave) for the last sixty days. I hung up and called the MPs. While I was waiting for them to show up I was looking through his record and found that he had been going around the country, never in the same place twice, collecting his pay like clockwork. Now the MPS office was just across the street from us so it did not take them long to get there. I swear that they found the  two biggest officers that they had on duty at the time. For when they came in the door they filled and came in one at a time. I looked up and pointed to the service member sitting there reading a magazine. They went and stood on either side of him. They did not say a word. He looked up from what he saw reading , put down the magazine and held up his hands without saying a word. They stopped and picked up his records and out the door they went.
