Many fondly remember the affable Byron from his tour in Spain 24 July 1969 – 3 September 1969. As a graduation present, his parents enrolled him in the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) (1 High Ridge Park, Stamford, Connecticut 06905)  in the Curso de Verano para Extranjeros Año 1969, Universidad de Salamanca, Estado español.

Here is the original notice in the Wisconsin State Journal for Sunday 27 July 1969, section 5 page 7:

Will Study in Spain

Byron Wade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl K Wade, 5007 Marathon Dr., left Thursday for a study tour in Spain. He will be enrolled at the University of Salamanca, and will then travel through Spain and North Africa.

Young Mr. Wade, a 1969 graduate of James Madison Memorial High School, will enter the University of Wisconsin in September.

He is participating in a program directed by the American Institute of Foreign Study.

He was billeted in the Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé and studied Spanish in one of the numerous aulas. In those days the course secretary was José Luis de Celis Ullán (Villarino de los Aires, Salamanca 1934 – Madrid 2005).

El País of 22 January 2005 honored him with this obituary:

One evening, while showering, the poor kid fell through the tiled floor and cut up his foot and ankle. He soldiered on, however:

Leaving from Torremolinos, Andalusia, Málaga municipality, Comarca of Costa del Sol Occidental aboard the ferry Ibn Battuta (alternately Ibn Ba???ah ?? ????? ) long since scrapped, he and his fellow students spent a few days in Tangier.

While attending a belly dance show with his comrades, one of the dancers invited him center stage to go through the motions.Byron did as best as he could with his injured foot and did honor to the great state of Wisconsin.

Among the dozens in the audience, we number these lucky few:

Here is a letter from Byron to David R. Chapman reminding him of a financial obligation:

(late December 1969)

Hope school’s treating you OK.  Have you started thinking about a college yet?

The University of Wisconsin is really great.  I’m really learning a llot and having a great time.

I miss your counselling; it really helped me to get well faster in good old San Bartolomé.  Do you miss that Spanish plumbing?  Our vacation starts Saturday but I am leaving for northern Michigan tomorrow afternoon to go skiing for 6 days.  We recently were deluged with 8 in. of snow sot he conditions are great.  Thjs week has been rough because of term papers and tests but it’s all over now.

I hate to bring up an unpleasant subject, but how about sending me the money you borrowed from me at Torremolinos.  They just raised tuition and I’m really hurting for funds.

I hope you have a great holiday and are feeling great.
