Tears.

How did I get inside this pit?

The sides are way too deep,

they are smooth and slippery,

so sliding I do keep.

There must be a way out of here,

or down here I will die;

from high up in the atmosphere

I hear a voice do sigh;

"The answer’s very simple,

it’s really very clear;

the way for you to make escape

is for you to shed a tear.”

Well, I’m scared and lonely,

filled with a kind of dread

it really won’t take very much

to bring my tears to shed.

Once I do start crying,

I find I just can’t stop,

but this pit is filling up

and not by just a drop.

My tears are flowing freely,

cascading to the ground,

when landing they might make a splash

but there is no other sound.

I’m drenched up to my waist now,

and feeling rather cold,

how much time have I wept for?

I wish I could be told.

But there’s no sign of a ceasing,

so much sadness fills my heart,

the tears that I am leaking out

are only just the start.

Waist high now, I cannot move,

wading is really hard,

I have to give up trying

before going half a yard.

Chin height now, still going strong,

my feet begin to lift,

and soon upon this lake of tears

I slowly start to drift.

And look it seems I’ve made it,

but my face shows no sign of drying;

for the basic truth of it --

I simply can’t stop crying.
