LAKE

Grounded in the landscape

lap becomes basin

carefully sculpting and forming the lake.

Ancient, Welsh rock, steady and still.

Earth, sand and pebbles shaped perfectly to hold

the arches of each foothill

in front of the waters

and the backbone of the mountains

rising up and holding

the shoulder line of the ridge.

A perfect container for unsteady, stormy waters -

when the wind and rain lash out at the surface

and the white horses gallop madly across

or so to hold the glory of a clear, blue sky

reflected in the mirror of still waters.

Maybe a dull day, a bit choppy,

but look closely and catch the brown trout

jumping out of nowhere

and returning down into deeper depths.
