Sold to a man

her family forgotten

hoeing the garden ,

and picking the cotton.

The stock needs tending

the hay needs pitching ,

needing to serve

in the big house kitchen .

Six log cabins

side by side ,

neighbors close enough

to hear her cries.

Master needs a stroll

a breath of air ,

to release the heat

of his breeding mare.

She is aware ,

his misses knows ,

where he'll end up

while on his stroll.

December snow

quiets the duration ,

the cries of a fieldhand

born on the plantation.

Treated like a son

but still a slave ,

never plotting on

his escape.

Words of the railroad

and abolition,

she debates on the consequence

of her decision .

The Yankees intrude

with war in season ,

any slaves who join

will be given their freedom.

Plantation is less

population diminished ,

She loses her son

and feels the sickness.

A Quaker comes in the night

without a sound ,

and takes her away

to the underground.

Train of wagons

and forging slips ,

a treacherous path

for a weary trip.

Master is angry

his worries churn,

he offers a reward

for her return.

But each day is a step

towards the land of the free ,

barely surviving

on the lack of sleep.

The south boils in angst

over losing their quota,

but the winch of Georgia

has found Minnesota ..
