I open my eyes and its dark outside. I must've slept for at least an hour. I can hear people talking ,but don't recognize their voices just yet. As the fog clears from my mind, I realize the voices belong to my mother and Regina. And there’s something else. A smell. I can’t quite figure out what it is,but I can’t recall the last time I ate, either. I'm starving. Drawn by the sound and smell,I fumble in the dark for a moment, collecting my clothes so that I can leave the room without being questioned. He would kill all of us if I raised an alarm or question of any kind. As I emerge, the light in the hall temporarily disorients me. I gather myself and proceed to the source of the noise. As I turn the corner, I see my mother,Regina, and Davis all sitting at the dinner table in what I can safely assume is the dining room. They seem to be in good spirits and glad to be where they are. If they only knew. Before I have the opportunity to announce myself, he calls out to me. He seen me before anyone else. My mother jumps from the table and rushes to me,arms open wide. Her embrace is the most wonderful thing I have ever felt before as I sink into her and squeeze her just as tightly. “I'm sorry mom..” A tear rolls down my cheek. “Honey it’s not your fault..” she sobs. “I should’ve been more available to you.” “You always have been. I just snapped. I swear I'll never do it again..” The embrace is so tight I can barely breathe. She lets go and takes my hands in hers, staring into my eyes. I think for a moment that she is suspicious but the thought quickly leaves me as she turns to him with a smile. “I cant thank you enough for this. After everything she’s been through, someone like you is exactly what we need right now.” “Please, don't thank me. I would do anything for her,ma’am.” I take it literally. I know he’s not just putting on a facade for them. As she walks me back to the table and pulls the chair beside her out for me,I glance in his direction and see a quick wink and smirk as he gets up from his spot and heads to the counter to make me a plate. “Sweetheart, how are you?” Regina asks without leaving her seat. “I'm fine, I guess. Tired. Sore..” “I can understand that. You and I will take a walk or something in a little bit if its alright with you.” I look to Davis and he is walking to the table with a plate full of food. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the invitation. “Yeah, I'd like that.” I lie. I don't know what I'm going to say to her,but it can’t be no. “Cool. Eat up kiddo. I know you've gotta be hungry.” “I am. Starving, actually.” Without inspecting its contents, I slide the plate thats now in front of me as close to the edge of the table as I can,and begin tearing into it,shoveling food into my mouth as quickly as I can chew. I can hear everyone chuckle but I pay no mind. Whatever this is, it’s the most satisfying thing I’ve ever eaten before. It occurs to me that my captor really is perfect in every way. Smart, good looking, experienced lover,a good cook..my mind trails off. I'm reminded that he’s also unstable in every way. Dangerous and insane and a thief of lives. I swallow hard and stare down to the empty plate before me. Suddenly, all I can think of is going back to sleep. I wonder if he’s put something in my food. Remembering the walk that was offered, I look to Regina. She’s staring at me,now. Patiently waiting with a smile on her lips. Glancing in Martins direction,I quickly return my gaze to hers, and clear my throat. “So. About that walk..” I tempt a response. “Are you ready?” “Yeah, I think so.” Standing is difficult at first. The trembling In my legs still mildly apparent. She stands also and carries our plates to the sink, stopping at Martins side to thank him again before excusing both of us and heading for the door with her hand reaching for mine. I take it and follow her through the living room and out on to the porch. “You sure you're up for it?” “Yes.” The answer is short and almost inaudible. “Alrighty. I know a path through the woods not far from here if you wanna be gone a long time. Or we could always just walk the driveway. Its forever long..” “I'm actually kind of tired, is the driveway OK with you?” “Sure thing, babe.” We head for the driveway and I consider sprinting for the highway again. The only thing stopping me is knowing my mother is still in there with him. There's no telling what he would do to her if he thought he could coax me back. “So. Are you OK? Like, really OK?” I think briefly about telling her everything, but quickly decide against it. “I'm fine. I mean, better than I was a few days ago. I like it here.” The lie stings my throat as I hide the despair I know will bubble out of me if I say too much. “You look rested. Almost glowing. Good to see you with some color. What do you think about Martin?” “I..well..” Its hard to force out lies so fluently. I’ve never had to before. “I think he’s the reason I'm still here. I've never met anyone other than yourself thats so genuinely caring..” “Thats good.” She smiles. I can hear it in her voice. “Do you think you'll stay for a while?” “I'm not sure. “ “ You know he’s close to your age, right? I mean, not really close, but close enough..” “And?” “I'm just saying. A man like that is an oddity these days. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this,though..” I panic. He has everyone fooled, and I feel more alone than ever as I realize it. “Yeah, I’ve noticed. But I'm worried. What if there's a side we don't know?” Hint dropping may get someone killed,so I try and keep it subtle. “Why do say that, has he done something weird?” “Not really. Just paranoid,I guess.” “Well don't be. He’s a good guy, Liz. And I'm pretty sure he's into you. He just has a look in his eye every time he talks about you. I think you should hit on him. See where it goes, maybe you'll be surprised..” If she only knew,I think to myself, she’d be choking on her words. “I don't know. Maybe you're right. Thanks for coming out,by the way. And for taking care of my mother. You're amazing.” “Anytime, baby. You guys are the only family I have. Well,I consider you that way, anyway. “ “The same goes for you. We’d be lost without you.” The rest of the walk is fairly silent. I had thought she was going to question me and was terrified at first at what I would say to her. I find myself relieved that she's so oblivious of the situation and just wanted girl talk. As we walk back through the front door,I can hear my mother saying her goodbyes to Martin. I let out a sigh of relief, knowing I wont be interrogated any further tonight. I catch a quick look from Regina, but it ends as quickly as it came about as she walks in his direction to follow my mothers example. The moment they leave the driveway, after about ten minutes of tear filled hugs, he walks up behind me and rubs my shoulders before turning me to face him. “How was your walk?” “Was OK,I guess. I'm tired. You drug me again?” “Nope. Don't be so quick to believe I'm out to hurt you, Jill. I love you.” I scoff at the remark and try to turn away. Try. He stops me and brushes my hair out of my face instead. “I told you. I'm sorry about the way all of this went down. Just give me a chance.” “I have no choice. You've made that clear.” “Eventually, you'll not see it that way. You'll be happy.” “Doubt it. What do I call you? I don't even know if Martin is your real name..” he chuckles at the statement. “It’s not my real name,no. But you'll have to pretend it is.” “I'm already pretending enough.” “My name is Jeremy. Jeremy Martin Davis. I was half honest with you. Happy now?” “Ecstatic,Jeremy. Thanks.” “Any time, gorgeous.” He slips into the kitchen to finish cleaning up,and I stay where he left me, alone in the now pitch dark living room. Staring into the void of what my existence has become. I'm not sure how long I stayed in that spot before I crept back to the bedroom I had previously emerged from, but it didn't matter. Nothing mattered. I lye on the bed hoping to find sleep quickly so that I can escape this reality if only for a few hours, but just as I begin to drift away, I hear a noise at the door. I open my eyes to see him quietly closing the door behind him,and walk towards the closet nestled in the corner. I watch as piece by piece, his clothes find their way from his body to the hamper in the floor of the closet. I'm filled with a sudden heat and feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment as I recognize this feeling. I'm torn between continuing to watch and feigning sleep. Instead, I bury my face in the pillow I’ve been using so that should he look,he won’t see me gawking. I can only imagine how long he would gloat. The last thing I remember is feeling his arm slide around me as he climbed into bed.
