The World Cup is the occurs every four years and it’s the only sporting event aside of the Olympics, that has the whole world watching. As a football fan, I love the World Cup. It’s brought some great memories, but it’s also brought its fair share of pain. Being born in England, I naturally support The Three Lions at every major tournament, I’ve also had the chance on a few occasions to watch England play at Wembley.

My parents are Ghanaian, so I obviously get behind the Blackstars whenever they’re playing. My favourite memory was in March 2011, when England played against Ghana at Wembley. I remember having a souvenir scarf from the game; it was half England and half Ghana. That’s exactly how I felt on the day – split in half. The game was great, but what I remember well was how the English fans and the Ghanaian fans came together during the game. There were Ghanaian fans in the England end, but there was no trouble at all.

I remember someone shaking my hand and saying: “Well played, son!” After the game, the Ghanaian fans were outside dancing and some of the English joined in, it was like a carnival. That’s what football is about, bringing everyone together and that’s exactly what the World Cup does. No matter what your background is, who you’re supporting, you can always feel welcome at a bar or at a stadium. Rivalries are put aside, but we would rather focus on enjoying the occasion together. Of course there’s disappointment when your country leaves the tournament, but one thing I find incredible is the power of sport.

You have people who may not be from the same country as you, however they’re rooting for your team to do well! Wouldn’t it be great, if world leaders had the same attitude? Maybe even each of us! We live in a world where we have different cultures, religions and races around us. Imagine what could happen if we all rooted for each other?
