Adulation

Pete Hanley had never looked for it, never really wanted it, but it found him all the same. That star status that is only attained by the very few.

It came to him following the release of a successful album, but even more so following the lead role in a box-office smash. So the story wasn’t up to much, but all the starring roles were filled by people with ‘the look’, and he was one of them.

From living a normal life, being able to go anywhere, do anything, while attracting nothing more than the occasional admiring glance, now he was almost a prisoner.

If he went to a restaurant, he was besieged by both women and men wanting autographs, wanting to get a touch of his god-like skin. Dating was even worse! He took a girl out for a drink, and there they’d be, featured in a tabloid or a gossip magazine, along with conjecture about imminent wedding bells.

If he could go back in time, he would. He’d have opted for the normal life, stayed out of the public eye.

None of these people knew him, knew anything about him, other than what the media told them. How could you adore someone you did not know?

And yet that was what he lived with. Constant adulation! And, boy, it hurt so much.
