As a boy,

When stomach was ill and truly rough,

Father would rub my back

Until I was brave enough

That I might throw up.

Yet joy replaced despair;

Into the mess I would stare

And thank father for the strength

To give up control

And up the pain to the bin below.

Now, losing control of my functions,

I wish for that strength again.

Sometimes the strength and control,

But also the strength to let go,

And accept whatever peace may come.

I pray to a loving Divine,

One inside and all around.

Let me not cling to this earthly life,

Not when the time comes

That I must throw up my life

And accept whatever I become--
