Chapter 1

Part I

(1970)

Mercy, her name is Mercy.  Her mother named her that because she prayed for mercy when she delivered her, the last of seven children.

Mercy sat in the dark, in the late evening, in the old church bell tower down the street from her house.  The old, cracked bell hasn't rung here in this old church for years.  The officials, here in Cincinnati, Ohio have been discussing rehabbing this old church for years now.

Mercy was wearing her white, cotton sun dress that had been handed down to her from her four older sisters.  She rarely got anything new to wear, even her bras were hand-me-downs.  Mercy had to wear a slip with this dress because it had been washed on the board and hung in the attic to dry so many times, it was see-through.  Her mother didn’t like for her to wear it and threatened to throw it away all the time.

Mercy's slip was damp and sticking to her, even though it was cool and dark in here, she was still sweating.  She was starring through a long crack in the concrete wall.  Mercy turned sixteen today and she is in love!  She is in love with a boy named Benton.  Benton is two years older than she and is graduating high school this year.  She didn’t think he even knew she existed.  Mercy knew that Benton would be walking to his car, a 65 Mustang, from his part-time job as a stock boy at the corner super market.  He walked past the old church the same time every day, not knowing that Mercy was watching him.

Mercy came up to the bell tower every day, just to get a glimpse of him.  He was SOOO handsome!  He had almost black hair, medium complexion, and gorgeous blue eyes that she could stare into forever.  He also had a nice build.  He was one of the most popular boys in school and quarterback of their high school football team.

Benton's family had an old history and old money to go with it in this city of Cincinnati.  They owned a lot of businesses here, even the super market where Benton worked every day after school.  They lived in an area called Clifton, where there were many old mansions in a gas light district.  They believed that their son should learn the value of a dollar and earn his own money for what he wanted.  Of course, they had to keep up appearances, so they bought the Mustang for Benton for his sixteenth birthday.  They would also pay for his college education when it was time.  According to them, Benton would go to college whether he liked it or not. His mother pushed him, every day to study and she was always hinting he should go into politics. He really wanted to go anyway.  He was smart, and he wanted to be a doctor.  He would start next fall.

Benton never gave Mercy a second glance at school.  She was, after all, way too young to be his girlfriend.  Benton had dated several girls from school but had never really had a steady girlfriend that she knew about.  He told his mother that he just hasn't found a girl that could hold his interest for very long.  Once, Mercy overheard Benton's mother in the grocery store, talking about the poor, white, trash that lived in Northside and how that area was getting so bad with crime that they should move that store out of this neighborhood.
