Charlotte woke up in a hospital bed with her mother beside her and no earthly idea why she was there or how she got there. Her eyes darted around anxiously and her breathing quickened.

“Mom? Wh-what happened?” She looked down at the bandages on her aching wrists.

“Charlotte, it’s okay, you’re okay don’t panic, okay?”

“I didn’t... Did I?”

Her mother nodded, tears welling in her eyes. “You had to have two transfusions.” She turned her arm to show the bandage on the inside of her elbow.

A nurse entered the room and took out Charlotte’s IV before asking, “Are we ready to go?”

“Go where?” asked Charlotte.

“You’re being sent to Flowerhill. Your mother already signed the papers.”

“You’re sending me to an asylum?!” she yelled at her mother.

“It’s not an asylum it’s a mental hospital and it’s for the best, sweetheart.”

“But I’m not crazy! I’m not!”

“That may be the case but you are considered a threat to yourself,” replied the nurse.

Charlotte pressed her palm against her forehead, fighting back tears. “Fine,” she muttered. “Alright, fine. But for the record one sad night doesn’t make me crazy, okay? I’m not some weirdo mental patient, I- I...”

“Oh, charlotte…” her mother rose and gave her a hug.

The nurse left and came back with a wheelchair and a massive police officer.

“Are you going to hurt me?” the cop asked.

Charlotte laughed. He was easily twice her size. She probably couldn’t if she tried.

“It’s not a joke, m’am. Are you going to hurt me?” he asked, stone-faced.

The blood drained out of Charlotte’s face. “No, of course not.”

“Good. Then I won’t have to cuff you.”

The nurse helped Charlotte into the wheelchair and off she went.
