In Chicago there was a man named Tom. Tom had just got off the bus and was walking home after a particularly late night at the office when he was pulled into an alley by an unknown assailant.

The assailant pulled out a knife. It gleamed in the low light.

Tom, terrified, offered the assailant his wallet. The assailant grabbed it with one hand and stabbed Tom in the stomach with the other. He twisted the knife violently, then yanked it out and ran off into the night without a word.

Tom clutched at his stomach, felt the blood gushing, collapsed against a wall.

Luckily, a man named Eric saw the whole scene and called an ambulance.

Tom woke up just as his girlfriend, Marissa, was saying, “Thank you, thank you so much! If you hadn’t found him when you did… He could’ve…” She burst into tears again.

Eric put a hand on her shoulder. A moment later, he looked over to see that Tom was awake and got Marissa’s attention. She rushed to his side and gently asked, “How are you feeling?”
