The Boy That Last Laughed

‘Beep, Beep, Beep!’ the alarm clock went off. John rolled in his bed and then slightly raised up to looks at the time. It was now six am. He Immediately remembered that it was his first day back to school and got off the bed. He knew if he didn’t he’d run late.

He rushed into the bathroom, brushed his teeth and took a shower, got dressed, combed his hair and grabbed his backpack and headed downstairs.  When he reached to the bottom of the stairs he saw his mother dressed and ready for work. He walked into the kitchen where his mother was standing. ‘God Morning’ she said as he walked passed her. ‘Good Morning’ he replied as he opened the refrigerator and took out the milk. “So how you are feeling?” asked his mother. She put down her cup of coffee and looked at him.  “I’m fine mom” he said as he put the cereal in a bowl and poured milk in it. He sat on one of the chairs and quickly ate his breakfast. “Well I have to run off to work, but I’ll be home early today” said his mother “Okay” he replied with a full mouth. H finished his bowl and immediately went off to school.

When he got to school, he knew that he had English class first. He pushed his way through the crowded hallway of students and was about to enter the classroom when a strong, rugged hand grabbed his shoulder and forced him to turn around. He found himself staring at Chuck Lloyd, the ugliest school bully he ever had ever laid eyes on. Ever since sixth grade Chuck had always bullied him, took his money, best him up and even thrown him in the trash can one. He’d been bullied by this boy long enough to know that every time he approached someone it’s because he wanted something. As John stood there to face with Chuck, he realized that his friends came to back him up. Like they always did. “So, where’s your money looser?” he asked in a demanding voice. “I have none for you” he replied in a shaky voice. He never stood up to them before but he wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of thinking that he was scared. “I know that you’ve got money, now, where is it?” Chuck demanded. John realized that if he didn’t say anything, he would get beat up by Chuck and his friends. He turned around and was about to run when Chuck grabbed him and pushed him against the wall.  He raised his fist and proceeded to punch John, when he heard the familiar voice of his English teacher, Mr. Fitzgerald.

Mr. Fitzgerald stormed down the hall towards them. “What’s going on here?”. Chuck let him go and backed away. He looked at John and asked, “Are you okay?” “Yeah I think so” John replied. He turned to Chuck but didn’t bother to say anything.  “You two should get to class” he said. Without saying anything they both went into the classroom. John sat in the third seat in the third row of the class and Chuck sat right behind him. John felt uncomfortable but tried to ignore it. “Okay, Good Morning class, please turn to page sixty-- seven in your textbooks” said Mr. Fitzgerald. He then turned to face the white board. Chuck leaned in and kicked John under the desk, some of the other children just looked. “Later, you’ll dead boy” said Chuck. John was scared but tried to ignore his threats. At the corner of his eye he saw two of Chuck’s buddies laughing, their smiles twisting unpleasantly. Even that seemed like a threat.

A few hours later the school bell rang for dismissal. John knew that If he ran out of the school as fast as he could Chuck wouldn’t be able to catch him. So, he hurriedly pushed his way through the hallway and exited the school. But to his surprise, Chuck and his friends had been waiting outside for him. He froze in fear. Chuck smiled a little and then all of them encircled him. “I told you, we’d catch you” said Chuck. “Look, guys, I don’t want any trouble” said John. “Too late now” said Brad, one of Chuck’s friends. “I know what I’m going to do with you” said Chuck. “Take him and put him in my truck” he said to the other boys. They all got closer and John knew that he couldn’t fight all of them off. Then he got an idea. He remembered that Chuck used to bully every one of his friends before they began to side with him out of fear. He remembered how Chuck would beat them if they didn’t do what he asked. He then realized that the other boys didn’t have a choice. It was either they do what he said or he’d beat them up too. Then the two boys grabbed him and started dragging him across the walkway outside of the school. “Stop” John protested. “You don’t have to do this, I know you guys don’t have a choice and Chuck will beat you both if you don’t listen to him”. “Shut up” Chuck demanded. The other two boys that held him just looked at him. “Guys you don’t have to listen to him, stand up for once” said john as they kept dragging him. “He can take you both on one by one but not at the same time John continued, you guys can beat him, don’t you want that?” he asked.

“That’s enough” said Chuck in an angry voice. He walked straight up to John. Brad let go of his arm and came to face Chuck, “He’s right” he said. “What was that?” Chuck asked angrily. “We should stand up to you” and with that Chuck punched Brad and he fell to the ground. The other boy let go of John and started to fight with Chuck. Brad got up, his face only displayed rage, he joined the other boy and they both man handled Chuck. Punches and kicks were the main moves used on Chuck. John just stood where he was and watched. A smile then came across his face. “Finally, someone decides to teach him a lesson” he thought, He then burst into laughter as the boys let him go and he ran away.

The two boys came up to him. “Thanks for the advice John” said Brad. The other boy just smiled “Well I guess we won’t have any trouble from now on” said John, and with that he turned and started to walk away. They say that “Who laughs last, laughs the best”. “I’m glad it was I who last laughed” he thought to himself as he began to walk home.
