Could we have made it work with no future in sight?

I remember the times when there was nothing heard,

But your cries,

“Don’t leave me!”

But I walked away

I couldn’t stay,

Everything was behind me; nothing was ahead,

“Don’t say I didn’t care.”

I know what you might say, but it wasn’t an easy choice

I think about you every day,

Wondering if you’re happy,

“I never wanted to break your heart!”

In my dreams, I’m awake

I’m asleep as I live each day,

Our precious memories haunting me,

“Please, don’t let me go!”

Could we have ever made it work with no future in sight?

I did not want to condemn you,

I asked you to come with me, but you would not go,

“Baby, please, come with me!”

“Please, don’t make me let go!”

I never thought I’d see the day when I’d break your heart

But that day came,

I’m wrecked and filled with pain,

“Forgive me!  Please, forgive me!”

I cannot return to you

To see the pain in your eyes,

I could not keep myself together and we’d both come crashing down.
