When I was in fifth grade, we had a weeping willow in our backyard, so many memories...it was one of my favorite trees.

The Weeping Willow

In the faint summer, the sun-filled backyard, she walks out to her own personal jungle. To smell the plain air and to hear the sound of a baby bird calling out to their mother. She goes to the one thing that stands out to her and her alone. A weeping willow, to her, the tree of life. To watch it sway in the slight breeze, to feel it move her to swaying as well. She weeps to herself as she sways, to remind her of it once was, what she once was. The branches fold out like fingers reaching for her. She stops for a moment to listen to the whisper of the willow. It whispers to her the secrets of nature, and it sings a melody of the heart of the jungle that it's in. The willow stops and resumes the sway, falling back into the silence, where the breeze is all you feel and the heart is beating of the jungle in the backyard. She turns to look at the sky, the beautiful, clear, baby blue sky. She sways once more, falling into the rhythm of the music of the weeping willow. She turns back to the willow once more, looking past the strands of leaves, past the rough bark, to the roots and stumble across a picture. She sees you. The image of you in all of your broken perfection. You've singing and weeping to yourself all along, but why, oh why must you weep? When you sing a sweet melody instead of a dark harmony? Take a breath, close your eyes. You start sing, beautiful music pours out, but you stumble and fall back, weak. You drag yourself back, scraping your face on the bark, cutting your hands on the leaves. You weep and mourn and you're back to swaying to the sorrowful music of the weeping willow. Your reality is back, into the sun-filled backyard. You keep swaying, staring, and weeping at the willow, lost in your own jungle...the plain air and the sky sinks in, and there you sit lost forever.
