A crack of thunder,

a heart aflutter.

The shout of wind, lacking bluster.

This is what carnage wrought--terror like no other.

Oh, such was the devastation brought--

that beautiful destruction never sought--

under which, however,

rallied kindred souls, forever.

But the kindred souls, there forever,

could not claim to be put together.

Hearts down-trodden, eyes downcast,

they nevertheless fought to last.

Fight they did, those souls of a kind.

Struggling on, sound of mind.

Such problems did not yet bind

those brave and brawn, now defined.

The through the toils of those there

arose something more than fear

--a thought desperate to be made clear--

that through the terror, glory could be reared.
