Everyone Thinks I'm Following Them

Everyone thinks I'm following them.
They glance at me and move away from the fence.
They cross the street like they fear the beat
Of my tennis shoes walking in the heat.
I imagine they're hallucinating,
They're nervous and they’re ruminating.
But what kind of hit man has bright pink high tops,
Smiles when she gets to cross the street and hop
Up onto the pavement,
And hasn't learned her place yet?
I want to tell them I'm not hired to track.
That I'm not going to suddenly attack,
But now they're on the other side.
A road away from where I try
To turn away and again replay
What made them so scared
Of a freshman who's only ever unprepared.
