“MY LIFE IN A BOTTLE”

I SAW MY LIFE HELD IN A BOTTLE THAT ROLLED UP ON THE SHORE,

I LOOKED DOWN AT THE LABEL SHRIVLED, VACANT OF ALLURE.

I PICKED IT UP AND PEERED INSIDE AND SAW THE HEADY BREW,

AND POPPED THE CORK AND BREATHED THE MUSKY SMELL OF OLD, NOT NEW.

THE COLOR ONCE RICH VELVETINE, DROPLETS FRESH LIKE MORNING DEW,

HAD DULLED AND DARKENED, FOREVER CHANGED BY THE TALE IT HAD BEEN THROUGH.

AND THEN I SAT AND THOUGHT OF ALL THE DRINKS THIS BOTTLE ONCE SUPPLIED,

TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, ONE BY ONE – THE STORIES MULTIPLIED.

I SAW THE FACES WITHOUT NAMES, SOME SMILING SOME WITH FROWNS,

I HEARD THE LAUGHTER, FELT THE PAIN – MY OWN MEMORIES RIPENED BY THE SOUNDS.

THE FACES THEN GREW CRISP AND CLEAR, THE VOICES LOUD AND TRUE,

ECHOING ITS LOVELY TASTE, BUT WITH ITS CRITICS TOO.

AND THEN THE SONGS BEGAN TO PLAY, SHOUTS AND CRIES THAT RANG – WELL DONE!

THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A BAD TIME OR TWO, BUT NOW I CAN’T REMEMBER ONE.

I ONLY SEE THOSE TIMES OF CHEERS, MEMORIES BORN, LOVE FRESH AND NEW,

MY FAMILY, FRIENDS, MY CHERISHED ONES - ALL SHINED SO BRIGHTLY THROUGH.

THE HAPPY TIMES IT GRACED THE TABLE - THOSE TIMES I WISHED NOT PAST,

I DON’T KNOW HOW THOSE GOLDEN DAYS WENT BY SO VERY FAST.

AND NOW I PEER FROM HEIGHTS ABOVE AT THIS BOTTLE IN THE SAND,

I WISH IT COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT NOW IT’S VANISHED FROM MY HAND.

NO LONGER WILL THE CORK POP ANEW TO ADVERTISE ITS WORTH,

BUT NOW IT SEEMS THE TIME HAS COME TO BOX IT IN THE EARTH.

AND SOME WILL COME TO VISIT THEN EVEN THOUGH IT’S PUT AWAY,

AND SHARE THEIR TALES OF WHAT ONCE WAS, REMEMBERING - THE DAY.

AND SOME WILL COME BECAUSE THEY MUST, BUT NOT REMEMBER MUCH,

YET ALL OF THEM COMBINED AS ONE HAVE SERVED MY STURDY CRUTCH.

THE WINE I MADE THROUGH ALL THESE YEARS THAT FORGED A BOND  OF SUCH,

HAS GENTLY PASSED ON FROM THIS LIFE, EACH SOUL I HOPE IT TOUCHED.
