I Couldn’t Sleep Last Night

Trying to find comfort in a bed that tosses you up
but refuses to catch you
is impossible.
The night runs her fingers through my skin
trying to untangle restless veins.
I still
wrap my body in blankets
and bury myself further into an unsettled mind.
Leave my soul by the jetty.
I will sleep peacefully there
with the waves as my covers.
And I will pull them over me so
they kiss me goodnight.
The waves will always be inconsistent
in the way they reach my cheek
reminding me that the return of day when I wake
is a breached promise.
