The Reunion

That annual gathering of family combined with awkward conversation and hot dogs. Usually I avoid this type of gathering. I realize that everyone is becoming older now; so I feel an obligation to attend.

The day chosen is typically a hot and humid day in August. Some of the family will over indulge on beer and chicken. They will become loud and irresponsible with their expletives and sarcasm. Some will try to cajole the kids with the possibilities of s’mores if they stop fussing. The older ones will just sit and wait until they are approached as if they are royalty of sorts.

There are members in my family who have no filter. They say whatever they wish; with no regard for the feelings of others. This is the most difficult aspect of the reunion for me. I don’t think that the label of family allows a free pass to disrespect others.  Many members of my family do not adhere to this code. Before the day ends, I will likely have a barbeque stain on my shirt and a tear rolling down my cheek.
