Scaring Crows

It’s a strange thing, unexplainable really. Sunflowers galore grow here. Fields of the tall yellow flowers bloom year on year, yet my neighbours seem to struggle to grow just a few.

I collect the seeds, share them out, so it can’t be that. We sow them at the same time too. The earth would be similar, not a big difference in soil nutrients. None of us can understand it really.

I’m not selfish with them, share them with whoever wants some, and if they are sold I’ll share the proceeds. It still remains a big mystery.

It’s a similar tale with the apple tree. It blossoms and produces large rosy red apples by the basket full. The ground around it is not littered by fruit that has been plucked and pecked at by the birds.

They always stay on the tree until ready to pick, are always refreshingly sweet and crunchy.

It’s down to the fact that the crows stay away. Is it my hat that they do not like or my spirals of springing red curls of hair that bounce around when I move? Maybe they do not like my day-of-the-dead type make-up, although wouldn’t you think carrion crows would be attracted to it.

Or maybe they think I am a scarecrow! No, that could not possibly be it, could it?
