Your words were eggshells Emptied of all substance Drooling on countertops Any meaning they once had Now lay sizzling in a pan Scrambling into nonsense I remember you made me promise once That if you were ever like this To take you out back and put you down I brought your .45 to the hospital that day But as I saw you laying there The goofy grin on your face Your hand in mine I knew that I could never squeeze The trigger as softly as you held me Each day I brought that gun Each day I brought resolve And each day I left you plugged Into machines I left you in the care of hands That did not know what you wanted When all along what you wanted Was in my hands. It took two months for the cancer to take you Im sorry that I could not keep my promise I'm sorry that for two months you lay there unable to do anything Im sorry Can you forgive me?
