From Dream to Wake

By AndréaB

A child’s fears are answered simply by a child’s imagination

Often times untainted, yet easily persuaded to sinister thoughts of truth

Throwing one’s innocence into a quagmire of consternation

Her eyes of youthful wonder, nothing less of pure

Yet a brilliant shade of crimson they siege

Laughter is the language of the soul, for a jester aim

An intent of malice and panic, to unnerve and unravel

A faultless impression she strikes the minds eye

Unlike her ideals, which all prove to be in vain

Foreboding of tenderness, love and care

To cherish a sheer glimpse of jester-like blue

A silent scream is not heard, a smile seizes her lips

Quiet giggles float all around me, piercing the stillness

Sadistic and manic in its sweetness

The heart stops, blood runs cold

I’m petrified

My eyes close, as if to console my dread

Mystified breathe clings to deathly chilled air

I spy a soft glint off the object she gently caresses, gaze never wavering

Her approach is slow with clear purpose

I scream one last time in hopes to be heard, to be saved

Much too close, a hand darts out and claims wrist

The darkness dissolves, a floor and soft covers swaddle me

The only sounds are that of my laboured breathing, heart pounding in my ears

Life is granted to me through reality, not by dream

Yet the vision of the jester girl remains quite vivid

A glance falls to my wrist to reassure myself of her absence from this world

Ice flows in my veins, a terrified gaze traces the small hand like bruise that has formed to my wrist

As I sit motionless a distant sound of metal being dragged is heard

Another faint sound accompanies the warning

Whispers? ...No
