In memory of someone taken way to early in his life. Based on something I saw shortly after his demise, in a way that felt rather serendipitous.

A red cardinal sat upon a barren tree,

A ray of red amongst a mix of grayish tan,

Mary upon the snake.

As it sat, I thought of you, my friend,

Leading your life in a similar way.

Where your life was, beauty followed,

A spirit of bright red would be seen

And the voice of a bird would be heard,

Surveying from its perch

As a willing guardian.

The bird left while I looked away,

But it shall not be forgotten.
